Umineko no Naku Koro ni - Game 2

Is Beatrice trying to act young? She looks better in her usual dress.

I just finished watching the second game (episodes 6 - 11) and it's one hell of a ride. All I can say is Beatrice is a super sadist! Her killing methods were cruel and her actions in episode 11 were extremely sickening. It's really sad to see Battler helpless in front of her.

In this game, there were 2 Battler. One was playing the game and the other one seemed to be observing the game and arguing with meta-Beatrice. I've always been supporting Battler and frankly, I'm quite disappointed with his attitude in this game (the one who is playing). In the first game, he rejected the existence of magic right to the very end, but in the second game, he gave up halfway and accepted the presence of Beatrice and magic in front of Maria. Surprisingly, the one who fought back in this game was Rosa. Sadly, she lacked the willpower of Battler in the first game to fully reject the Beatrice. However, her perseverance did manage to motivate Battler to challenge Beatrice to another game. The second game was so one-sided that I couldn't help but to acknowledge Beatrice's power. I'm trying to think of some scientific explanations but the only one I can think of now is illusion, which is not very scientific.

Players:

Battler (with the help of Bernkastel? hmm.. I seriously didn't see how she had meddled with this game) vs Beatrice

Rules of the game:

- When Beatrice speak of the truth, that sentence will be displayed in Red letters. This is to prevent Battler from arguing that there's not enough information or evidence.

- When Beatrice tells the truth, she will use red, but she does not bear the responsibility of establishing the fact by showing proof.

Dying Order:

1. Krauss, Natsuhi, Eva, Hideyoshi, Rudolf and Kyrie
- They all died in the Chapel with candies and cookies stuffed in their stomachs. (eek.. the thought of it makes me feel like puking!)

2. Jessica and Kanon
- They were ambushed by Beatrice, who summoned her legion of goat butlers against them. Kanon used his power as a furniture to fight off the butlers until Beatrice summoned her two Stakes of Purgatory, Asmodeus and Satan, who successfully killed Jessica and Kanon.
- Beatrice left Jessica's body in the locked room but made Kanon's body disappeared.

Hmm.. furniture has very interesting powers.

Asmodeus

Satan

3. Chiyo and Nanjo
The servants stumbled across Kanon, who was severely wounded but apparently still alive. Kanon told them that Rosa was the one who attacked him. However, it was soon discovered that this Kanon was a duplicate created by Beatrice. The fake Kanon attacked the servants, killing Nanjo and Chiyo before being destroyed by the other servants.

4. Gohda, Shannon and George
George, Shannon, and Gohda were retrieving Natsuhi's room key from her corpse, when Beatrice ambushed them. They immediately ran off and managed to reach Natsuhi's room. When George and Shannon were trying to retrieve Natsuhi's magical mirror from a locked box, Gohda was killed by Beelzebub. Beatrice then confronted George and Shannon. Empowered by Natsuhi's mirror, Shannon attempted to defend herself and George, but they were both killed by Beatrice.

Beelzebub

Mahou Shoujo?

Conclusion of the second game

Rosa and Maria went to the Chapel to take one of the gold bars. Meanwhile, Genji brought Battler before Beatrice. In exchange for an explanation on how Beatrice used her magic to commit the crimes, Battler was enslaved and humiliated by Beatrice before being killed by her goat butlers. Kinzo was also killed by the goat butlers. Rosa and Maria were also ambushed by the goat butlers and were killed as they tried to escape. In another dimension, Beatrice tortured Rosa mentally into accepting her as a witch. In the end, Rosa gave in. Just when Beatrice thought that her plan was perfect, Battler entered the dimension. Having regained his will to fight Beatrice, he challenged Beatrice to another game.

Battler looks so pathetic!

Apparently, that pink stuff is the tongue of Eva. (*puke*)

Yea! Battle's willpower is revived!

Afterthoughts:

For the second game, Genji is the most suspicious character. The reason is obvious - he's the only one who survived! Not only did he survive, he's also serving Beatrice. How and why he helped Beatrice is not yet revealed but I'm pretty sure that he's involved in the killings somehow.

Anyway, as we all know, Battler did submit to Beatrice, became her furniture and got killed. So I'm just wondering if Beatrice did answer Battler's questions. (p_q) I guess she did since she promised to. Even though she's a super sadist, she has been honoring her words so far.

I believe the next game will be more interesting as two more witches will be joining in the fun. One is Bernkastel, who (according to Beatrice) was already meddling with the second game, and the other is Lambdadelta, who bears a grudge against Bernkastel and so is joining Beatrice's side.

Pandora Hearts - Full of twists!

Pandora Hearts is a series full of interesting characters, good looking guys and plot twists. The plot twists make this series unpredictable and exciting to watch. The creators did a very good job in keeping the audience in suspense and subtly revealing the truth behind the Tragedy of Sabrie. However, sadly, even at the very last episode, the whole truth is not revealed.

Other than the animation quality, my other complaint about the series is that there are too many Oz X Alice scenes. I like both characters but I'm not too fond of this pairing. I very much prefer Oz X Gil scenes as I'm very touched by Gil's loyalty to his master. Throughout the last few episodes, I had this feeling that Gil wanted to tell Oz something (other than about the father) and it's sad that Gil ended up saying nothing much.

So now, the question remains whether there will be a second season or not. The last episode gave no clues at all and I can only hope and pray hard that there will be. I actually like some of the new characters (Elliot and Reo) and hope to learn more about them.

Story: 9/10 – Great
The story is very well written and it's full of twists and cliffhangers at the end of each episode. Though the mangaka borrowed some elements from Alice in Wonderland, I personally feel that the story is very fresh and original. Initially, the series might seem like a typical fantasy series, but as the series progressed on, it evolved into a great mystery series with many twists and unexpected revelations.

Character: 9/10 - Great
One of the things I really like about this series is its characters. From Oz, the fun-loving and flirty kid, to Gil, a cool guy who is obsessed with his black hat, to Alice, the short-tempered glutton, and to Break, the weird humored Pierrot, everyone is unique and likable. However, as the series progressed, we slowly learned that everyone is not what they appear to be and they all have a painful and dark past.

My favorite characters are:

Jack Bezarius (He's so dreamy looking!!) ♥

Gilbert Nightray (He looks so cool!) ♥

Oz Bezarius (He's so cute!) ♥

Break (Initially, I don't really like him but towards the end, I actually find him very interesting.)

Alice (She's strong mentally and physically. I like that. I hate damsel in distress!)

Art/Animation: 7/10 – Fairly Good
In general, the art is pretty good. The characters are beautifully drawn and so is the background. Animation wise, it's lackluster. The animation quality in the first episode was bad but thank goodness, it slowly got better.

Music: 8/10 – Good
I find the OP and ED average. However, I really love 'Lacie' - the melody from the pocket watch. It's really beautiful.

Enjoyment: 9/10 - Great
Because of the mystery surrounding the series and the exciting twists, I really enjoy Pandora Hearts. Other than that, it also has a good mix of humor and action.

Overall: 9/10 - Great
I've read comments that many have dropped this series because of the animation quality. I personally think that it's a big pity. The interesting plot, great cast of characters and exciting twists more than make up for the poor animation quality.

07-Ghost - Full of Bishounen!! ♥

When I first started watching 07-Ghost, I had great expectations for it. This series has the potential to be good as it has many bishounen, interesting setting, and a not-too-bad plot. 07-Ghost had a pretty good start but sadly speaking, in the later half of the series, it started to dwindle. Given how the series ended (abrupt and lame), if this series is popular enough in Japan, there may be a sequel. I heard many comments that the manga is better so I may start reading it to make the judgment myself.

Plot: (7/10) – Fairly Good
This is the story of Teito Klein, an orphaned slave who became the top military academy student. However, an unexpected turn of events left him pursued by the forces of the Barsburg Empire. Now an escaping convict, Teito is sheltered by the Church. There, he discovered many mysteries surrounding himself, the Church, and the Empire. In order to find out the Truth and to avenge his best friend, he decides to become a Bishop.

It's a fairly interesting story about friendship and vengeance. It also has some comic relief moments, which help to make the series more light-hearted. However, I think the series focuses too much on Teito and his (very little) character development, and too little on the revenge plot. This makes the series a little boring.

Characters: (9/10) – Great
The characters are the only thing I really like about 07-Ghost. Not only are most of the characters bishounen, their personalities are very likable too. The only complain I have is there's too much focus on Teito. I never really like Teito as he's always in his negative thinking mode.

If you follow my blog, I think you should know that my favorite character is Mikage. ♥ I like him since episode 1 and I'm glad I did. He's such a sweet, brave and caring character! It's just so sad that he had to die. Thank goodness he returned as a cute pet. I hope the stuffed toy version will be on sale soon.
♥♥♥

I also like the three Bishops. Though they have very different styles, they all look cool. Frau has the badass look, Castor has the intellectual look and Labrador is oh-so beautiful.

The newest character, Hakuren looks really good too.

Switching to the bad guys, I think that it's a pity that Ayanami is given so little screen time and character development. He's supposed to be the main villain, the most evil thing that ever existed in the series, but I cannot feel that at all.

Art/Animation: (8/10) – Good
In general, the art is pretty good. The characters are beautifully drawn and so is the background, in particular the Church. As for the animation, it's just average. The battle scenes are not impressive but not half-bad.

Sound/Music: (8/10) – Good
I personally like how they incorporate the ED ('Hitomi no Kotae' by Noria) into the series. It makes certain scenes extra touching (ie. Mikage's death scene).

Enjoyment: (8/10) – Good
Frankly speaking, initially, I'm only watching it for the bishounen. Overall, I think this series is very pleasing to the eyes.

Overall:
(7/10) – Fairly Good
07-Ghost has the potential for greatness but it turns out to be plain. I think this series can do better if it can focus more on other characters, in particular Ayanami and his gang.
